Sands are sourced and processed in many ways, dependant on the use required. Whether it is in the construction industry as a Bricklaying sand or a triple washed fine white sand that tilers use, which is also the sand to place in children’s sand pits, there is a specific type for each application.

BRICK SAND / WHITE

The obvious use is as a bricklaying medium when mixed with cement. Common mix ratio is 5 or 6 parts sand to 1 part cement and 1 part Lime. White brick sand is used where a light coloured mortar is desired. The choice of a grey or an off white cement will determine how light in colour the mortar is. Although referred to as white sand it is almost invariably an off white to grey colour that can alter from batch to batch. Mortar colour can be changed with the addition of a coloured oxide. Is also used as a base under above ground Pool liners.

BRICK SAND / ORANGE – RED - YELLOW

The obvious use is as a bricklaying medium when mixed with cement. Common mix ratio is 5 or 6 parts sand to 1 part cement and 1 part Lime. Orange brick sand is used where a darker mortar is desired. Mortar colour can be changed with the  addition of a coloured oxide. It is also used as a base under the liner of above ground pools.

FINE WHITE WASHED

A very fine particle white sand. It has quite a number of uses. Due to being washed three times to rinse out all impurities it is most suitable as a sand pit sand for children. Can also be used for tiling, rendering or plastering, placement under pavers and to sweep into gaps once  pavers have been laid.

PACKING SAND

Generally a high clay content sand which is suitable as a packing material for placement under concrete slabs as well as a base for pavers and under water tanks.

CONCRETE SAND

A medium to coarse washed sand its primary use is in the production of concrete, but can also be laid under pavers and as a rendering and plaster sand. Particle size ranges from dust to 4mm. Colour is normally a cream but it can vary occasionally.
